Paying in Chile: cards, cash and local QR
A practical guide for short stays · Chilean peso (CLP)
How to pay in Chile as a visitor
- Use cards first.Foreign Visa and Mastercard work at most formal merchants. Carry a second card and pay in Chilean pesos.
- Do not plan around QR.The main Chilean QR products require a RUT, Chilean identity card, local account or Chile-issued card. No general passport-only visitor route was found.
- Keep some pesos.Cash is still useful at ferias, small businesses, in rural areas and for regional transport or outages.
Payment apps and QR in Chile
Chile has several QR products, but the ones reviewed are local ecosystems. These are the names a visitor is likely to see and the gate behind each one.

Why is there no recommended visitor QR app?
MACHBANK, Rutpay and Mercado Pago operate separate local ecosystems. Onepay enrolls cards issued by Chilean institutions. Major cross-border QR apps reviewed for neighboring countries do not currently list Chile, so a passport field elsewhere is not proof of Chilean QR access.
How do I pay for transport in Santiago?
Contactless Visa and Mastercard, including foreign-issued cards, work on Metro and Tren Nos–Estación Central at the adult fare. The announced open-loop coverage does not include RED buses. Use a physical bip! card for buses and integrated bus/Metro journeys; app-based bip!QR registration uses ClaveÚnica.
Using foreign cards
- Pay in CLP.If a terminal offers your home currency, compare the complete quote and normally keep the charge in Chilean pesos.
- A surcharge is not universal. Some specifically enabled Transbank merchants can show a surcharge on foreign Visa or Mastercard credit cards. The terminal must display it before acceptance.
- Carry a second issuer.Acceptance is broad, but smaller businesses outside Santiago may not accept cards and individual authorizations can fail.
Cash and ATMs
- Keep a modest CLP reserve.Cash remains common at ferias, for low-value purchases, in regions and on parts of regional public transport.
- Use protected ATMs.Read the operator fee before confirming and add any fee from your own issuer; no single national fee or withdrawal limit applies.

Continuing your trip?
Check payment access again when you cross a border. A wallet or QR code that works here may have different requirements elsewhere.
