Peru

How to pay as a visitor. Peruvian sol (PEN).

The short version

  1. 1Cards, QR and cash all matter. Cards are useful in cities, while Yape and Plin QR payments are common for low-value purchases. Keep soles for places where neither route works.
  2. 2A Yape or Plin logo is not enough. Visitor apps support different QR types. Takenos excludes terminal-generated POS codes; Moreta may require a standard business QR.
  3. 3Confirm eligibility before adding money. A passport can satisfy the document step, while residence, app-store region, phone number and funding access can still block an account.

Moreta and Takenos publish a visitor-capable Peru route. Ligo has useful local features, but its public rules do not establish onboarding for a short-stay nonresident.

Which Peru QR can each app pay?

Moreta documents Yape and Plin merchant QR plus a separate local-bank QR payment to a friend. Takenos documents interoperable person and merchant QR but explicitly excludes POS QR. Ligo documents Plin plus QR on selected Niubiz and Izipay terminals. If a code fails, ask the seller for another supported QR or use a card or cash.

Can I open Yape or Plin directly?

Yape allows passport registration only through a linked BCP account and debit card; opening that bank account is a separate eligibility step. Plin is a feature inside participating banks and wallets, not a standalone account. A regulator allowing foreign documents does not require every provider to offer quick visitor onboarding.

What should I check before funding?

Confirm that your document, residence, phone country and app-store region are accepted. Then compare the complete route: deposit charge, any conversion into the wallet balance, the live PEN payment quote, and the way you can withdraw money left after the trip.
