Bolivia
How to pay as a visitor. Boliviano (BOB).
The short version
- 1Cash and QR go together. Markets, neighbourhood shops and transport use both. Ask the seller which payment methods they accept.
- 2Check how you’ll fund your app. Your documents, country of residence and funding method affect which options you can use.
- 3Keep another way to pay. Cards are useful where accepted. Small boliviano notes help when a seller or an app can’t take your payment.
Payment apps
Choose an app you can verify and fund. Requirements depend on where you live and how you add money.

Paying a seller’s personal QR
Moreta and Takenos explicitly support personal bank QRs as well as merchant payments in Bolivia. Other apps publish less detail about which QRs they accept. Check the recipient and amount, then have the seller confirm the money arrived in their account.
Can I use Yape or Tigo Money?
These local wallets require local identity documents. Yape Bolivia lists a non-Bolivian identity card as a signup blocker. Tigo Money accepts a Bolivian foreigner identity card and requires an active Tigo, Viva or Entel line. Neither documents a standard passport-only visitor signup.
Your own card
- Wise, US, issued by CFSB: CFSB cannot be used in Bolivia. Lead Bank cards have a different list. The issuer is on the back of the card.
- Pay in bolivianos. If a terminal or ATM offers your home currency, decline it. Your issuer’s own fees still apply.
- Activate before travelling. US-issued Wise cards must be activated in the US. Brazilian-issued Wise cards need a non-BRL balance for spending abroad.
Cash
- ATMs are in cities. Check the machine’s fee and your bank’s overseas charge before confirming.
- Cash pickup can be an option through Western Union or Xoom. Passports are accepted pickup ID, but the transfer must be approved and ready at your chosen location. Check sender-country eligibility, fees and opening hours first.
- US dollars are the easiest notes to exchange. Compare the bolivianos you actually receive; the central-bank rate is a reference only.
